Candlestick with satyr and tritons. Severo Calzetta da Ravenna (Ravenna, 1465-1543). Workshop of the 16th-17th century. Bronze, transparent gilded patina with traces of black patina.

This highly original candlestick depicts a walking satyr, in his right hand holding a cornucopia to which a pine cone-shaped bobege is screwed.

At his feet are two small tritons playing trumpets. The entire composition rests on a triangular, clod-shaped base bordered by a swirl decoration.

The initial cataloguing by Bode and Planiscig attributed these satyr candlesticks to Andrea Briosco, known as Riccio. As studies progressed, they were traced back to the workshop of Severo Calzetta da Ravenna.

There are roughly two types: one with a standing satyr advancing, holding a candle in both hands, and the other with a kneeling satyr holding the candelabra in his right hand. Furthermore, these pagan-style utensils were often paired with inkwells, serving both as a candlestick and an inkwell.

The compositions could vary depending on the client and the various elements were assembled with imagination. Our candlestick represents a unique example of its kind, as the combination of the two small tritons is not found in any other similar objects.

The satyr's facial features and the treatment of the fleece, in a vermicular shape, reflect the production of Severus of Ravenna.
Even the transparent patina reflects the best vintage castings.
