Pair of Byōbu Screens, Japan, 20th century
Height x width: 153 x 140 cm
one depicts snow-capped Mount Fuji, framed in the foreground by three imposing pine trees (Matsu). In Japanese culture, the pine tree is a symbol of strength, steadfastness, and longevity. The second is a copy of a section of the work “Red and White Plum Blossoms” (紅白梅図, Kōhakubai-zu), a famous masterpiece painted in the early 18th century (between 1710 and 1715) by the Japanese master Ogata Kōrin.
