Ebony and bone coin cabinet, Spain, late 16th – early 17th century
Height x width x depth: 23 x 25 x 16 cm
featuring geometric decorations of Islamic origin, common in Hispano-Moorish art, along with the combined use of ebony-veneered wooden surfaces paired with bone inlays, both dyed green and left in their natural state. The coin box rests on a molded base and features a hinged front door on the right side. The interior is characterized by a series of multiple small drawers arranged symmetrically, with small bone knobs.
The decorative scheme follows the Mudéjar tradition, featuring abstract and repetitive geometric patterns of Islamic origin, attributable to the Castilian or Toledan production area. The structural design, sober and devoid of figurative elements, is consistent with the transitional phase between the late Renaissance and the early Iberian Baroque.
