Gold brooch with a coin, late 19th century

Elegant yellow gold brooch executed in the Roman Archaeological Revival style, featuring a slender linear mount supporting, by means of six evenly spaced claws, a reproduction of a Late Roman Imperial coin.

The mount, remarkable for its refined simplicity, is composed of a delicate circular gold frame within which the coin is fully visible on both obverse and reverse, a characteristic feature of the finest Roman archaeological jewellery produced during the second half of the nineteenth century. The long pin, seamlessly integrated into the overall design, lends the composition a harmonious balance and understated elegance, recalling the form of Classical fibulae and other linear ornaments inspired by antiquity.
From both a stylistic and technical standpoint, the brooch displays characteristics fully consistent with the production of the Roman Archaeological Revival, the movement pioneered by the celebrated Castellani workshop and subsequently embraced by several of the leading Roman jewellers devoted to the revival and reinterpretation of ancient goldsmiths' work.
