A pectoral icon depicting the Crucifixion, 18th century

Bronze casting
Height ร— width: 6.5 ร— 4.5 cm Weight: 29.6 g.
With four additional figures: the Mother of God and Saint John the Evangelist at the lower sides, accompanied in the upper section by an announcing angel and the centurion Longinus or another saintly witness. The surface shows evident signs of wear resulting from devotional use, as the Old Believers considered tarnish (oxidation or darkening) a sign of corruption and wished metal icons to remain constantly polished; when they began to oxidize, they were quickly rubbed with a cloth, sometimes lightly dusted with chalk, sand, ash, or brick powder, restoring them immediately to their original brilliance.
