according to a compositional typology traditionally linked to family commissions and the needs of Russian domestic devotion. In the upper left register, the renowned iconography of the Mother of God of Kazan (Kazanskaja) is recognized, portrayed half-length with her head gently inclined toward the Infant Jesus, who stands in an erect and blessing position. The upper right register houses the hieratic figure of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra, depicted in episcopal vestments while holding the open book of the Gospels and displaying on either side the small floating roundels (clipei) of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, recalling the miracle of the Council of Nicaea. The lower register is entirely dedicated to the sphere of warrior saints and protectors of the faith, showing Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica on the left and Saint George the Victorious on the right, both portrayed in Roman military attire covered by red cloaks, while firmly holding the cross of martyrdom in their right hands. The scenes are framed and separated by red borders and surmounted by large, legible calligraphic identifying inscriptions in Cyrillic Church Slavonic characters along the upper margin. From a stylistic point of view, the artwork exhibits a warm and patinated pictorial execution, dominated by bright tones of brick red, ochre, and antique gold, with the rendering of the faces conducted according to the canons of the ancient tradition. The icon is in a good overall state of preservation, characterized by a widespread and fascinating craquelure of the preparation that attests to its authenticity and long historical use within the beautiful corner of a Russian home. The model of the four-panel icon (Četyrekhčastnaja) responds to a precise theological and practical intent widely diffuse between the 18th and 19th centuries, conceived to enclose within a single wooden panel an entire compendium of intercession and protection for the household. The choice of figures is never accidental but perfectly balances the highest pillars of Orthodox worship. The presence of the Virgin of Kazan guarantees the protection of the home and the nation, while Saint Nicholas embodies the universal protector of the afflicted, merchants, and children. The lower section, guarded by the great megalomartyr saints Demetrius and George, adds a strong apotropaic value and defense against the evils of the world, transforming the panel into a true spiritual shield for the patron's family.
