The composition presents the two apostles facing one another in a perfectly balanced arrangement, positioned symmetrically on either side of a landscape dominated by a watercourse leading towards a monumental central architectural structure, identifiable as an idealized view of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, symbolizing their shared apostolic witness and martyrdom in the Eternal City.
Saint Peter is depicted on the left with his hands clasped in prayer and his gaze directed towards Christ. His face, characterized by short curly hair and beard with greying features, faithfully follows the traditional Eastern iconography of the apostle. He wears a dark green tunic covered by a broad reddish-brown himation, modelled with refined highlights that lend volume and depth to the drapery.
On the right stands Saint Paul, recognizable by his broad forehead, pointed beard, and the richly bound Gospel Book held in his left hand, while his right hand rests upon his chest as a gesture of witness to the faith. The ample red mantle enveloping the figure creates a striking chromatic contrast with the green tunic, in accordance with an iconographic scheme firmly established in nineteenth-century Russian painting.
In the upper section of the composition appears Christ Blessing, emerging from a luminous opening among the clouds and depicted half-length. He raises His right hand in blessing while holding the Gospel in His left. His presence confirms the apostolic authority of the two saints and constitutes the theological focal point of the entire composition.
The background is enriched by a delicate landscape featuring trees, classically inspired buildings, and a broad expanse of water leading in perspective towards the central sanctuary. The brilliant gold leaf employed for the halos and Christ's nimbus harmonizes with the luminous blue tones of the sky, contributing to the refined chromatic balance of the composition.
The inscriptions in Church Slavonic clearly identify the two apostles, while a cartouche placed in the lower section bears a liturgical inscription referring to their shared commemoration.

This icon belongs to the finest production of Central Russia during the late nineteenth century, a period in which the principal workshops of Moscow, Mstëra, Palekh, and Kholuy produced numerous icons intended for private devotion, characterized by a harmonious synthesis of ancient Russian iconographic traditions and the academic style that developed during the Imperial period.
The iconography depicting Saints Peter and Paul together, combined with the presence of Christ in Glory and the symbolic representation of St. Peter's Basilica, emphasizes the universal role of the two apostles as the foundations of the Church and privileged witnesses of the Christian faith. Inspired by the seventeenth-century Muscovite tradition, the composition is reinterpreted through a more refined pictorial language distinguished by precise draftsmanship, brilliant colour harmonies, and particular attention to landscape rendering.
