Russian Icon depicting the Holy Trinity, 19th century

Tempera on panel
Height x width x depth: 26.8 x 24 x 2.4 cm.
Panel icon depicting the Holy Trinity according to the iconography of the Orthodox tradition. At the center of the composition are the figures of the Father and the Son, seated side by side on either side of the globe of the earth, a symbol of universal dominion and creation. The Son is represented according to the customary Christological model, while the Father is rendered in a hieratic form, in a solemn and blessing gesture. In the upper part of the composition, the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove, radiating from above, completing the Trinitarian mystery. The work belongs to the Russian post-Byzantine iconographic tradition, characterized by a strong theological and symbolic dimension, in which the representation of the Trinity follows codified compositional schemes closely linked to the doctrine of the Orthodox Church.
