Russian icon depicting the Twelve Great Orthodox Feasts, Early 20th century

Tempera on panel
Height x width: 31 x 26.5 cm.
according to the tradition of the Orthodox Church. The composition is organized into a strict subdivision of panels, each illustrating one of the main episodes of the liturgical feasts of the Orthodox calendar, according to codified iconographic patterns of post-Byzantine matrix. At the center of the composition is the depiction of the Anastasis and the Resurrection of Christ, represented according to traditional iconography with Christ descending into hell to liberate Adam and Eve. The ensemble reflects the complex doctrinal structure of festive icons, in which the evangelical narrative translates into a highly codified visual system, intended for meditation and liturgy.
