Russian Icon depicting the Virgin Eleousa with a metal riza, Early 20th century
Tempera on panel with riza
Height x lenght: 12 cm x 10 cm. Weight: 881.4 g
Panel icon depicting the Virgin Eleusa according to the iconographic tradition of the Orthodox Church. The Mother of God is shown half-length with the Christ Child held close in an intimate gesture of tenderness, their faces gently pressed together and slightly inclined toward one another, emphasizing the profound emotional bond between Mother and Son and the mystery of the Incarnation. The Child is depicted embracing the Virgin, following a devotional scheme of Byzantine origin widely распространed in post-Byzantine production. The composition belongs to the Orthodox iconographic tradition, in which the Eleusa type of the Virgin plays a central role in private and liturgical devotion, visually expressing the theme of compassion and the maternal intercession of the Theotokos.
