Translation of the inscription
甲戌秋日,仿山樵,吴熙曾。
«On an autumn day in the Jiaxu year, imitating [the style of] Shanqiao, [of] Wu Xizeng.»
甲戌 (Jiǎxū): year of the Chinese sexagenary cycle; in the 20th century it corresponds to 1934.
仿山樵 (Fǎng Shānqiáo): "imitating Shanqiao." Shanqiao (山樵, "Mountain Woodcutter") is a nickname for the painter Wang Meng (黄鹤山樵, 1308–1385), one of the "Four Yuan Masters," renowned for his dense and complex landscapes. The phrase indicates that the artist consciously drew inspiration from his style.
Wu Xizeng (吴熙曾): artist's name. Wu Xizeng (also known as Wu Jingting, 1901–1972) was a 20th-century Chinese painter active in Beijing and associated with the Peking School tradition. He was a student of Jin Cheng and taught at the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts.
