Bronze figure of Weituo Pusa. China, 20th century.
Height 37 cm; width 19 cm; depth 14 cm
Weituo Pusa is charged with protecting and maintaining the Buddhist Dharma. In Buddhist monasteries, his image is often placed in the first hall, with his back to Maitreya and his face toward the Buddha image in the main hall.
The statue is depicted standing with feet firmly planted. The left hand is raised in a gesture of reassurance, while the right holds a stylized vajra. He wears elaborate Chinese armor and a helmet, with flowing scarves. The armor features shoulder pads shaped like monster masks and is tied with ropes. A pale blue scarf flows over his shoulders and falls to his hips.
