Il dipinto è accompagnato da un'expertise del Prof. Nicola Ivanoff (1 ottobre 1977) che giudicava la tela un'opera giovanile del periodo caravaggesco di Nicolas Regniér, prossima alla Cena in Emmaus di Potsdamm, pur ravvisandovi la tendenza all'idealizzazione classicista che avrebbe caratterizzato la maggior parte della produzione dell'artista.
