Saints Jude Thaddeus and Simon

Oil on canvas
cm. 20x29. Framed
Pair of paintings mounted on a single support and stretcher. An old inscription in pen on the reverse of the frame reads: “BARON CAMUCCINI / (...) 1770”.

These are preparatory bozzetti for the oval compositions executed by Vincenzo Camuccini in 1822 for translation into mosaic above the altar housing the relics of Saints Jude Thaddeus and Simon in St Peter’s Basilica. The two apostles are depicted half-length, in three-quarter view, with their inspired gaze directed outward. The present Saint Simon closely corresponds to the drawing published in the catalogue of the 1978 monographic exhibition of Camuccini at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, here developed in colour with remarkably free, rapid and painterly handling.
