This unusual allegorical composition derives from an invention by Carlo Maratti for the painted face of a night clock. The composition is known through an engraving by Bernard Picart and preparatory studies by Maratti, and was originally devised for a clock commissioned from the Roman clockmaker Giuseppe Campani by Cardinal Antonio Barberini as a diplomatic gift to Louis XIV.
