San Gulielmo d'Aquitania
Oil on canvas
cm. 145x93,5. Framed
The painting depicts Saint William of Aquitaine, Count of Toulouse, in a monastic habit and helmet, recalling his former life as a warrior before becoming a hermit. The battle scene behind him refers to his defence against the Moors near Narbonne. The work combines a vigorous naturalism with Spanish and Neapolitan influences, particularly those of Jusepe de Ribera and Mattia Preti.
