Late Imperial-era icon depicting Christ enthroned with the Archangel Michael, Saint Alexander Nevsky, and ten interceding saints, Late 19th century
Egg tempera on panel and gold leaf
Height x width: 58 x 47.5 cm
Likely commissioned as a high-ranking family icon or for a significant dynastic occasion—given the richness of the figures depicted—the composition is strictly dominated at the top by the theophanic figure of Christ Almighty (Gospod' Vsedržitel') enthroned. He sits in glory amidst the clouds, holding an orb surmounted by a cross, with the Holy Spirit—in the form of a dove—hovering above, set within a radiant burst of dense, golden rays. Below this celestial vision, arranged in an elaborate, dramatic, pyramidal assembly against a background of brilliant, pure gold, stand twelve intercessory saints—carefully selected by the patrons—whose names are clearly identifiable through delicate, calligraphic inscriptions in Old Church Slavonic, painted in red above each golden halo. In the very foreground, kneeling in an attitude of profound prayer and supplication, are the composition’s two primary figures: on the left, the warrior-saint and ruler Saint Alexander Nevsky (Svjatyj Knjaz' Aleksandr Nevskij), portrayed in royal regalia, wearing an imperial crown and a sumptuous, ermine-lined cloak; and on the right, the Archangel Michael (Svjatyj Archangel Michail), depicted with great golden wings and the magnificent armor of the commander of the heavenly hosts. Flanking this central axis is a magnificent hagiographic gallery, organized into superimposed registers. On the left side, in the foreground, stands the holy hierarch Saint Basil the Great (Svjatyj Vasilij Velikij), dressed in episcopal vestments finely highlighted with gold and holding a closed book of the Gospels. Behind him are a crowned warrior saint (likely Saint George or Saint Demetrius), the ascetic monk Saint Theodore of Sykeon (Prepodobnyj Feodor Sykeot), and a group of three female martyr saints in a posture of prayer, among whom Saint Natalia and Saint Tatiana can be identified. On the right side, in a symmetrical arrangement, appears the episcopal figure of Saint Peter (Svjatyj Petr), accompanied by the Forerunner, Saint John the Baptist (Svjatyj Ioann Predteča), wearing the hermit’s garments of the wilderness. Above them are four resplendent female martyr saints—crowned royal figures rendered with exceptional, miniature-like refinement—including, most notably, Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Svjataja Mučenica Ekaterina), Saint Paraskeva, and Saint Justina. Stylistically, the work is a superb example of the sophisticated late-imperial academic style (associated with commissions from the Romanov court and the finest workshops in Moscow or Saint Petersburg). The faces and skin tones exhibit a masterful, naturalistic quality, characterized by soft shading and gazes of extraordinary expressive intensity. The artist’s technical virtuosity is revealed in the lavish use of pure, mirror-polished gold, which illuminates the entire panel and embellishes every detail—from the folds of the garments and royal mantles to the intricate, jewel-like crowns—through an incredibly dense, microscopic application of golden highlights.
