Resurrection of Christ with the Descent into Hell (Voskresenie – Anastasis), 19th century
Egg tempera on panel
Height x width: 31.5 x 26 cm
Surmounted at the top by a magnificent calligraphic inscription in the vyaz’ style—featuring elongated characters set against a gold background—the composition employs a complex, characteristically Russian narrative structure. It fuses two theological moments concerning the victory over death into a single pictorial space. The lower section centers on a theme from ancient Byzantine iconography: the Descent into Hell (*Anastasis*). Christ the Savior, enveloped in a circular mandorla of divine light and wearing garments highlighted with gold, stands victoriously upon the shattered gates of Hades, which lie in a cross-like arrangement over the dark abyss. With a dynamic, salvific gesture, He grasps Adam and Eve by the wrists, drawing them forth from their respective tombs, accompanied by hosts of the righteous—kings and prophets of the Old Testament (among whom David and Solomon can be identified). The upper portion depicts the Resurrection in a historical-liturgical sense: Christ rises in glory from the uncovered tomb, surrounded by adoring angels and enclosed within a radiant, ovoid mandorla. The surrounding space is densely populated with subsidiary scenes that enrich the Paschal narrative: on the upper left, the Myrrh-bearing women appear at the empty tomb before an angel in white robes; on the right, a procession of the blessed—led by the "good thief" Dismas (carrying his own cross)—moves toward the gates of Paradise, depicted as a turreted architectural structure guarded by cherubim. From a stylistic perspective, the work displays a high level of miniature-like refinement, featuring a rich palette that juxtaposes the warm tones of ochres and cinnabar reds with the deep greens of rocky landscapes (gorki), which geometrically delineate the various theophanic scenes. The execution is exceptionally meticulous, with delicate highlights that accentuate the drapery of the garments and the expressiveness of the numerous, minuscule figures.
