St. George Slaying the Dragon, Early 20th century

Canvas on panel
Height x width: 53.5 x 43 cm
The composition unfolds according to a comprehensive narrative framework of extraordinary theological and symbolic richness, extending well beyond a mere depiction of a chivalric duel. At the center of the scene stands the monumental figure of Saint George, portrayed as a young knight encircled by a golden halo and clad in splendid, plumed military armor; a sweeping cinnabar-red cloak billows dynamically behind him, symbolizing the impetus of the Holy Spirit. Mounted on a vigorous gray horse with golden trappings, the saint pierces—with pinpoint precision—the fiery maw of a winged dragon, which lies defeated at his feet, submerged in a pool of dark blue water—an emblem of the forces of chaos and evil. Above the knight, a hovering angel leans down from the clouds to place a golden crown upon his head, sealing his spiritual triumph and martyrdom. Dominating the entire theophany from above, within a semicircular mandorla of darkening clouds, emerges the figure of Christ the Savior (the Pantocrator) in a gesture of blessing, holding an open book of the Scriptures. On the right side of the panel, the narrative is enriched by historical details from the legend: in the foreground stands the hieratic figure of Princess Elizabeth (or Alexandra), dressed in royal attire and a purple maphorion, her head adorned with a crown, captured in the act of gazing toward her savior. Behind her rises an opulent and complex urban architecture, complete with towers and a fortified, Neo-Byzantine aesthetic; from its windows, the sovereigns—the princess’s parents—look out alongside the imperial court to witness the miracle and the subsequent conversion. On the left, the background is defined by characteristic, jagged, geometric rocky mountains, finely highlighted with small white strokes that accentuate the verticality of the scene. Stylistically, the work displays a level of painterly execution typical of the finest devotional art—evident in the miniature-like delicacy with which the faces of the courtiers and the details of the armor are rendered—all further enhanced by expansive, lavish areas of polished gold leaf that cover the skies and various ornamental elements.
