Inkwell supported by Lions, 16th-17th century?
Bronze, patina, traces of gilding, onyx
22x15x15 cm
This interesting object could be an inkwell or an liturgical instrument, such as an incense holder.
In the shape of a small table monument, the object has a hexagonal pyramid cup placed on a circular onyx plinth. The cup is covered with onyx plates held by brass hinges. Three lions holding in their claws eagles support the cup. On the cusp a stylised eagle which serves as a grip.
The types of materials used and the craftsmanship suggest an old manufacture. For precise dating and provenance, it should be studied scientifically (alloy test).
