These tapestries were made in China during the period of the so-called "Cultural Revolution", 1966-1976, remembered in the slogan that appears below "Long live the victory of the great cultural revolution of the proletariat". Mao is surrounded by the defense minister, Lin Biao, and his wife Jiang Qing, who hold the Little Red Book in their hands. All three are surrounded by the red rays of the sun which illuminate the people.
Artifacts like these were made by groups of skilled weavers who applied the principles of socialist realism to an ancient art such as embroidery.
