    Two marine ivory Japanese netsuke, Meiji period, 1868-1912
        	walrus ivory netsuke (Obobemus rosmarus) depicting:
- a crouching man with a large drum resting next to him in the act of holding a drumstick, suggesting that he is ready to play or is engaged in a musical performance. The facial expression is serene and smiling, evoking a festive or celebratory scene. The motifs engraved on the drum and on the man's robe are extremely detailed, representing flowers and stylised waves, recalling Japanese tradition;
- a group of three characters around a low table. A man in the centre seems thoughtful or intent on drinking from a bowl, while another female figure observes him, and a small animal, perhaps a monkey, is crouched next to them. The scene is intimate and narrative, suggesting a convivial or joking moment. Each figure is carved with precision, with particular attention to facial expressions and details of clothing.
The table is decorated with a small tray and food, emphasising the atmosphere of a domestic gathering.
Signatures engraved underfoot.
