Christ Crucified, Northern Italy, late 13th first half XIV century

Wood sculpture
Height x width x depth: 90x18x14 cm ca.
made of softwood, probably Swiss pine (cembra).
The sculpture appears mutilated, missing both arms and the cross; It shows losses in the painted surface, but still retains clear traces of the original polychromy. The body of Christ, naked except for the loincloth knotted at the side, is carved with a twist that emphasizes both physical and spiritual suffering: the head leans toward the right shoulder, the eyes are closed, and the facial features are sunken. The musculature is carefully rendered, with visible ribs and abdominal muscles.
This type of representation, focused on Christ's human suffering, is typical of Gothic iconography.
