Sculpture St. Sebastian , Italy, Alpine area, 17th century
Height x width x depth: 140 x 50 x 35 cm.
Polychrome wood carving with gilding. The saint is depicted frontally, tied to a stylized cross-shaped trunk, according to traditional iconography. The body, idealized but marked by slight wounds, shows a simplified but effective anatomical rendering. Stylistic traits, such as the facial expression and the rigidity of the limbs, suggest a folk production, perhaps intended for a rural chapel. Traces of repainting and wear consistent with the period.
