In the fall of 1948, Arnaldo Zamperetti met Hemingway again in Cortina and gave him a book he had just read, "Scenes choisies" by André Mailraux. Hemingway reciprocated with the first Italian edition of A Farewell to Arms, with a dedication.
The volume is in fair condition, showing signs of use and age, with some missing parts, tears, and loose pages. It is clear that this volume is not considered ideal for a book collection, but is considered memorabilia due to its provenance and handwritten dedication.
Hemingway's signatures and writings in the collection have been subjected to a meticulous handwriting appraisal, a documentary copy of which can be attached.
From the personal and family memories of Aldo Zamperetti, son of the Bolognese pharmacist Arnaldo Zamperetti, who became a close friend of Ernest Hemingway after a bet in a billiards game.
Ornella Zamperetti, Arnaldo's younger sister, participated in a Miss Italy pageant but came in second, causing Hemingway to lose a bet. Hemingway had offered his billiard cue as a prize in exchange for Arnaldo Zamperetti's payment for the alcohol consumed during the pageant. Having lost the bet, Hemingway was forced to give up his billiard cue to the young pharmacist Arnaldo.
From that moment, a sincere emotional bond developed between Hemingway and the Zamperetti family, and today we can relive the essence of their friendship through this collection of objects.
