Hemingway, Ernest (Oak Park, 21 luglio 1899 – Ketchum, 2 luglio 1961), 1957

Lot consisting of a Montegrappa fountain pen and an autographed note by Ernest Hemingway

The pen is a Montegrappa piston-operated pen with a reservoir, a retractable nib with a control mechanism on the bottom of the pen, and a gold-like-plated celluloid barrel. The cap is marked MONTEGRAPPA, preserved in its original box, and is accompanied by a note autographed by Hemingway that reads, "Oct. 1957 - Dear Aldino Jr., for your first school day, 'Montegrappa' my favorite fountain pen - With my best wishes - Papa."

Hemingway's signatures and writings in the collection have been subjected to a meticulous handwriting examination, a copy of which can be attached.

From the personal and family memories of Aldo Zamperetti, son of the Bolognese pharmacist Arnaldo Zamperetti, who became a close friend of Ernest Hemingway after a bet in a billiards game.
Ornella Zamperetti, Arnaldo's younger sister, participated in a Miss Italy pageant but came in second, causing Hemingway to lose a bet. Hemingway had offered his billiard cue as a prize in exchange for Arnaldo Zamperetti's payment for the alcohol consumed during the pageant. Having lost the bet, Hemingway was forced to give up his billiard cue to the young pharmacist Arnaldo.
From that moment, a sincere emotional bond developed between Hemingway and the Zamperetti family, and today we can relive the essence of their friendship through this collection of objects.
