Michele Rocca Michele da Parma o Parmigiano
(Parma, 1671 - Venezia, 1751)

Apollo and Dafne

Oil on canvas
cm. 38,5x51. Antique frame
This refined depiction of a celebrated myth from Ovidโ€™s Metamorphoses exemplifies the elegance and compositional grace of Michele Rocca, a leading figure in the Rococo evolution of early eighteenth-century Roman painting. His graceful classicism, fluid brushwork, and luminous color are fully expressed here. The work reflects Roccaโ€™s taste for mythological subjects and finds close parallels in his Angelica and Medoro and Nymphs in a Landscape (Galleria Comunale, Prato), and in Adam and Eve Expelled from Paradise (Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford).
