Apollo and Dafne
Oil on canvas
cm. 38,5x51. Antique frame
This refined depiction of a celebrated myth from Ovid’s Metamorphoses exemplifies the elegance and compositional grace of Michele Rocca, a leading figure in the Rococo evolution of early eighteenth-century Roman painting. His graceful classicism, fluid brushwork, and luminous color are fully expressed here. The work reflects Rocca’s taste for mythological subjects and finds close parallels in his Angelica and Medoro and Nymphs in a Landscape (Galleria Comunale, Prato), and in Adam and Eve Expelled from Paradise (Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford).
