The painting is a high-quality version of Francesco Solimena's successful composition, known to exist in at least three other versions. Two of these are painted on copper, like the present example, and are now housed at Chatsworth House in Devonshire and in the Valerio collection in Geneva, respectively, while a large version on canvas is preserved at Palazzo Madama in Rome.
