“San Filippo” Writing Desk, Rome, 18th Century, Louis XIV Period
Height x width x depth: 105x136x72 cm.
Elegant Roman “San Filippo” writing desk from the 18th century, in the Louis XIV style, crafted in walnut and burr walnut with refined inlays in various fruitwoods. The rectangular top is decorated with intricate geometric reserves and shaped motifs that are echoed on the drawer fronts and side panels. The upper section features a series of small drawers arranged on two levels with gracefully curved and serpentine lines, while the lower section includes two larger drawers.
The structure rests on four tapered square legs joined by an elegant double “X”-shaped stretcher, ending in turned feet. The composition, both harmonious and balanced, reflects the Roman tradition of the period, blending architectural rigor with the decorative exuberance typical of the Baroque taste.
