Table and pair of chairs with inlaid elephant ivory plaques, Lombardy, Second half 19th century

Table height x diameter: 92 x 108 cm. Chair height x width x depth: 114 x 46 x 46 cm. Seat height: 49 cm.
The circular table rests on a turned base richly carved with plant and phytomorphic motifs. The top features six finely engraved elephant ivory plaques (Loxodonta Africana) arranged radially and separated by geometric partitions decorated with plant racemes, scroll motifs and phytomorphic branches.
Immediately below the top runs a continuous band decorated with leafy festoons and ovules, carved in relief. The supporting structure consists of four turned uprights joined by a sturdy crossbar shaped and carved with scrolls. The table ends with curved, curled shelf feet, typical of the 19th century Neo-Renaissance tradition.
The plaques on the top depict views of famous Italian cities: Rome, Milan, Venice, the Gulf of Naples, as well as a lake landscape identifiable as Lake Como, in which a typical β€œLucia” boat is recognisable in the foreground and, in the background, probably Villa Pizzo in Cernobbio. In the centre, within a circular plaque, is a representation of the statue of the Tiber with Romulus and Remus (now in the Louvre).
The pair of chairs features tall, shaped backrests, topped with a refined fan-shaped carved element, while the surface of the backrests is marked by a rigorous geometric pattern of ivory panels and frames, alternating with scroll motifs and floral decorations. In the centre is a circular medallion featuring semi-nude female figures surrounded by phytomorphic branches.
The seats, which are wide and flat, echo the decorative pattern of the backrest: a geometric layout of squares and diagonals enclosing stylised plant motifs. The corners feature small circular medallions with engraved busts, while in the centre, within a rhombus, stands a female figure in motion, also surrounded by refined scroll motifs.
The legs, turned and curved, are highly sculptural and joined by H-shaped crossbars that increase their stability. The feet end in spindle-shaped elements, lending strength and harmony to the whole.
