Ivory Christ, Southern Italy, 19th century
Total weight: 2989 g
finely carved. The harmonious proportions, the pained but composed expression, and the drapery of the loincloth, rendered with soft folds, contribute to a refined whole. The cross on which the sculpture is mounted is entirely covered in mother-of-pearl, openworked and inlaid with ornamental motifs typical of luxury devotional objects. Small elements of red coral are inserted at the ends and at the points where the arms meet. The crucifix is set in an imposing gilded frame, richly decorated with scrolls, foliage, and shell motifs reminiscent of the Baroque or Rococo styles. The red velvet background further intensifies the contrast with the cross.
Height x width of frame: 63 x 44 cm
Height x width of cross: 29 x 18 cm
Height x width of Christ: 10 x 8 cm
