Marine ivory, carnelian and gold wax seal, France, early 19th century

Total weight: 12.5 g
The entire surface of the handle is decorated with a dense composition of dancing putti and floral garlands in bas-relief, iconographic elements typical of the Neoclassical style, which exalted the purity of forms and inspiration from classical antiquity. The transition between the handle and the base is embellished with a sumptuous yellow and rose gold frame, finely chiselled with naturalistic motifs. The embossed flowers, leaves and small buds are made with extreme skill, skilfully alternating the different shades of gold to create a refined chromatic effect. The lower part houses the seal consisting of a finely engraved carnelian. The engraving depicts a heraldic emblem, probably belonging to a noble family or a member of the emerging bourgeoisie, who used the seal to authenticate documents, letters and official correspondence.

Total height: 8.1 cm
Height ivory: 5.9 cm
Ivory major diameter: 2.2 cm
Base diameter: 2.2 cm
