Ostrich egg on brass base, Italy or France, late 19th century
Height x diameter: 30 x 13 cm. Weight: 630 g
round, convex and fluted in shape. The egg is adorned with a decorative metal band applied along the central part, depicting a series of winged female figures dancing in classical style, probably inspired by mythological or allegorical subjects. The upper part is closed by a crown-shaped frame, also in brass, surmounted by a small knob. This type of artefact belongs to the nineteenth-century tradition of art objects and exotic curiosities, derived from the Renaissance and Baroque “Wunderkammern”.
