placed in an ebonized wooden case with golden copper decorations. At the center of the scene is the Virgin and Child enthroned on an architectural structure resembling a shrine. Above them, a canopy is supported by two winged cherubs. On either side of the columns of the aedicule are St. Joachim and St. Anne. Below them, kneeling in adoration before Mary, are: on the left, St. Anne with her severed breast placed on a small tray; on the right, St. Catherine of Alexandria; behind Saint Agatha is Saint Stephen, the first martyr; further below is Saint Cecilia with her organ, and on the right is Saint Agnes holding a lamb and the palm of martyrdom. In the center is the coat of arms of the Sfondrati family surmounted by a cardinal's galero.
The object comes from Pope Gregory XIII, Nicolò Sfondrati (1535-1591), received on the occasion of his election to the cardinalate in 1583. It was later purchased by Cardinal Scipione Borghese after Gregory XIII separated from his possessions following a mystical crisis.

Currently on display at the Uffizi Gallery for the exhibition Cera una volta. I Medici e le arti della ceroplastica, from December 18, 2025, to April 12, 2026. Curated by Valentina Conticelli, Andrea Daninos, and Simone Verde, the exhibition is the first initiative entirely dedicated to Florentine collections of ceroplastic art from the 16th and 17th centuries. The exhibition aims to investigate the production of wax images, a practice rooted in popular sensibility since ancient times, which in Medici Florence, between the end of the 15th and 17th centuries, underwent a significant revaluation and renewed recognition in the field of fine arts.
