Penitent Magdalene

Oil on canvas
cm. 65x51,5. Framed
The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Sandro Bellesi.
The painting is recorded in the Zeri Photo Archive (inv. no. 75309).

This fine Penitent Mary Magdalene has been recognized by Sandro Bellesi as an autograph work by Francesco Lupicini, the Florentine painter trained in the circle of Cristofano Allori and later active in Spain. The saint, immersed in a deeply dark space and absorbed in meditation before a small wooden cross, is rendered with strong introspective intensity and a luminous plastic clarity that enhances the devotional character of the image.
As noted by Bellesi, the painting is connected to a group of nearly identical versions preserved, among others, at the Palmer Museum of Art of Pennsylvania State University and in a private New York collection, confirming the importance of the Magdalene theme within the artist’s production. The pictorial handling, slightly more broken and textured than in the other known examples, also reveals affinities with early seventeenth-century Florentine painting, particularly with Cristofano Allori, Francesco Curradi, and Matteo Rosselli.
