Sibyl
Oil on canvas
cm. 74x60. Framed
The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Francesca Baldassarri.
This elegant female figure, identifiable as a Sibyl through her antique dress and the presence of books on the table, is attributed by Francesca Baldassarri to Giovanni Martinelli and constitutes a significant addition to the artist’s catalogue within the sphere of secular subjects. The composition, centered on the enigmatic gaze of the protagonist and the soft sensuality of the flesh tones, fully reveals Martinelli’s refined pictorial language, characterized by rich brushwork, warm brown tonalities, and dramatic lighting effects. As noted by the scholar, close typological and stylistic comparisons may be drawn above all with the Allegoria della Conoscenza del Sapere Umano, formerly in the Feroni collection and now preserved in the Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. S. Marco e Cenacoli, Feroni, no. 15).
