Inkwell with panoplies. Early 19th century. Black patinated bronze.

13.5 x 8 x 8 cm
This small historiated globe inkwell rests on the backs of three seated cherubs.

The lid's handle features a child embracing, perhaps a swan or a webbed-footed goose, holding it tightly by its long neck.

The globular body deserves careful examination because it displays, in high relief, a series of highly refined panoplies on classical themes. Profiles of women with their hair gathered with tambourines, archaeologically styled cups filled with flowers, and heads of bearded fauns, all in the most exquisite archaeological style.

For this reason, in full Grand Tour style. The Mohammed on which it probably rested is missing.
