The Tivoli Falls. Tempera on cardboard. 19th century.
Cardboard only 41 x 51 cm - Framed 55.5 x 65.5 cm
This enchanting view depicts one of the most depicted landscapes in the 18th and 19th centuries by foreign painters visiting Rome, and beyond.
Claude Lorrain and Gaspar Dughet, to name just the best known, attempted to depict the pristine Roman countryside, dotted with classical ruins and wonderful villages such as Tivoli.
Such views were much loved by foreign travellers on the Grand Tour and therefore easily sold.
Our view, with its delicate yet vibrant tones, depicts Tivoli and its waterfalls flowing into a stream. A conversation in the foreground between archaic figures in 18th-century dress completes the composition.
Perfectly preserved tempera that reflects the style of late eighteenth-century landscape painters such as Bernardino Bison.
On the back, the card of a French shop where our landscape passed.
