Cupid. Barthelemy Prieur (1535-1611) School of. Probably 17th century. Bronze with a transparent reddish patina, traces of black artificial patina.

The bronze 11.5 x 8 x 9 cm
This small and delightful invention belongs to the catalogue of works by Barthelemy Prieur, the court sculptor of Henry IV and Marie de' Medici.

In addition to monumental statuary, Prieur produced a series of small bronzes with subtly erotic female themes. Other subjects, including this cupid, enjoyed considerable success and were replicated by his workshop or by other, unidentified foundries.

Our replica features beautiful modeling and patina consistent with early castings of this school, often of a transparent reddish color, with traces of black artificial patination.
