Inkwell supported by lions or a container for liturgical use. 16th-17th century. Patinated bronze with traces of gilding, onyx.
22 x 15 x 15 cm
This interesting object could be an inkwell, unless it is a liturgical instrument, such as an incense holder.
The cup, shaped like a truncated hexagonal pyramid, is covered with onyx slabs held in place by brass hinges. Three column-bearing lions support the cup, holding three birds of prey, perhaps eagles, in their talons.
On the cusp is a stylized eagle that serves as a handle. The whole thing sits on a circular, truncated-cone base, also made of onyx.
This small tabletop monument is characterized by a materiality and craftsmanship that make it seem very antique. The term "Revival" is often used when certain objects are inspired by distant eras, but they are not. In this case, I find nothing that unmistakably recalls a 19th-century approach to work.
We consider the object to be antique, but we offer it with the benefit of the doubt because, beyond individual stylistic considerations, it should be scientifically studied to establish its age and provenance (at least by examining the alloy).
To be studied, to be developed, for collectors.
