Risen Christ. Florentine art, 16th-17th century. Patinated bronze.

33 cm
The prototype of this resurrected Christ is to be found in a marble work by Michelangelo, created in 1515 and currently located in the Roman church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva.

This is not a slavish copy since the original, although conceived completely naked, was immediately "dressed up" with various draperies, different from the one present in our version.

Even the small loincloth currently in use, which covers the genitals and not the buttocks of the marble work, is a 20th century addition.

The ancient draperies placed on Michelangelo's masterpiece are more similar to those of our Christ and give indications of the ancient production of our bronze statuette, which would otherwise have a more skimpy loincloth, like the current one.

Another curious detail is the sock, present only on the right foot, as it was added almost immediately in bronze to protect the marble from the rubbing of devotees and removed in the 20th century. This detail also testifies that our casting was made in ancient times, when the sock was still in place.

Our bronze is characterized by a splendid chiseled finish, especially noticeable in the beautiful head with its long flowing hair. Other anatomical details are also highly crafted, such as the feet and the generous drapery.

Our founder worked on Michelangelo's prototype, creating an original sculpture. A copy was made in Florence by Pietro da Barga as part of a series of reproductions of classical statues.

Given the high quality and smoothness of our bronze, it would not be too wrong to investigate the influence of Guglielmo della Porta, but these are only suggestions.
