Russian devotional cross mounted on a painted panel, 19th century

Bronze casting and tempera on panel
Height × width: 43 × 35 cm. Weight: 2745 g.
This refined artifact belongs to the typology of the so-called icons with metal insert (Ikona s vredom), a production of high artistic quality and profound theological complexity particularly widespread in Russia between the 18th and 19th centuries, especially within the communities of the Old Believers (Staroobrjadcy). The artwork is structured around a devotional cross in cast bronze (of the canonical eight-pointed type), perfectly inset and integrated within a recess carved into the surface of a tempera-painted wooden panel. The pictorial decoration of the panel extends and completes the narrative of the Crucifixion expressed in relief on the bronze cross, transforming the object into a continuous Christological cycle linked to the mysteries of the Passion and Redemption. In the upper portion of the panel, on either side of the main arm of the cross, the pictorial narrative unfolds through two scenes of strong dramatic impact: the Deposition from the Cross (Snjatie s kresta) is depicted on the left, while the Lamentation and the Entombment (Položenie vo grob) find their place in the right compartment. In the lower register of the panel, at the foot of the metal cross, the Calvary scene is completed by the customary row of standing witnesses arranged symmetrically, according to the strict canons of Orthodox iconography. On the left side appear the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist caught in poses of mournful prayer, while on the right side stands the figure of the Centurion Longinus, whose presence symbolizes the recognition of Christ's divine nature by the pagan world.
