Russian Icon depicting an Archangel and Saints, Early XX century
Tempera on panel
High x Length 10,5 cm x 431 cm Weight: 605.4 g.
The scene is arranged according to a devotional scheme of clear post-Byzantine derivation, in which the figures are placed frontally and conceived as intercessors before the divine realm. Above the figures, Christ Pantocrator emerges from the clouds within a luminous clipeus, following the traditional iconography of His heavenly manifestation. The work belongs to the Orthodox devotional iconographic tradition, in which sacred figures are represented according to codified and symbolic schemes intended for private and liturgical veneration. The strict compositional order and the frontality of the figures reflect the theological function of the icon, understood as an image of intercession and spiritual presence.
