The Cavalcata del Possesso of Clement XI towards the Lateran Palace
Oil on canvas
cm. 172x121
This historical painting depicts the solemn procession (Possesso) of Pope Clement XI (elected in November 1700), the traditional ceremony by which the newly elected pontiff took official possession of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, Cathedral of Rome. Held on April 10, 1701, the event was one of the most prominent and magnificent spectacles of Baroque and 18th-century Rome. The composition captures the vast square in front of the Lateran complex, dominated by the obelisk and framed by the architecture of the Lateran Palace and the Basilica, with spectators viewing the event from windows and loggias. The procession winds through the square in an articulated serpentine path featuring mounted troops, cardinals in full vestments, valets, and gala carriages. At the center of the cortege, Pope Clement XI is portrayed seated on the sedia gestatoria, escorted by guards and prelates.
This painting is a rare visual record on canvas of the ceremony, as most surviving documentation of the event exists only in written form or through prints and engravings.
