Flight to Egypt
Oil on canvas
cm. 102x127,5. Framed
The painting was attributed to Nicola Vaccaro by Prof. Nicola Spinosa (verbal communication to the owners).
This joyful depiction of the Flight into Egypt exemplifies Nicola Vaccaro’s adaptation of the Neapolitan seventeenth-century tradition to the emerging Classicist and Baroque trends. The painting can be compared with Lot and His Daughters, Naples, private collection (Izzo, A37, p. 185), Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert, Naples, private collection (Izzo, A38, pp. 185–186), and, in particular, the Flight into Egypt, Rome, private collection (Izzo, A40, pp. 187–188), which features an almost identical group of the Madonna and Child on the donkey.
