Portrait of Eleonora Boncompagni Borghese
Oil on copper
cm. 14x10. Framed
Francesco Petrucci records three portraits by Baciccio identified as Eleonora Boncompagni Borghese (1642–1695), niece of Pope Gregory XIII and wife of Giovan Battista Borghese, Prince of Sulmona. The present copper is a miniature version of the larger canvas, which was offered at Christie’s, London, in 1999 and subsequently sold at Finarte, Rome, in 2006. The two versions are closely related, with minor variations in the flowers and, particularly, in the sitter’s more elaborate hairstyle in the present work.
