Penitent Magdalene
Oil on canvas
cm. 84x72. Framed
Sandro Bellesi attributed the painting to the mature period of Simone Pignoni, highlighting its high quality and intense mystical pathos. The penitent Magdalene is depicted with traditional attributes of repentance, including a skull, a metal cilice and a loaf of bread. The sensuous rendering of the figure and the soft sfumato are characteristic of Pignoni’s devotional painting.
